For the Month of History (October), the Spanish artist duo Twee Muizen made this painting in the Akkerstraat.

The theme of the Month of History in 2019 is She/Him which investigates how gender differences are historically shaped. Together with the Stadsarchief Breda we researched the story of Maria van Antwerpen, who pretended to be Jan van Ant. Maria from Breda enlisted in the army as Jan van Ant and married a woman twice. One day she was recognised as Maria van Antwerpen and was convicted by court-martial for "very groove and high falsities" and "mocking the divine and mensch laws" and banished from Brabant.

When Maria was asked about her motives she replied:

‘IN NATURE I AM A MAN PERSON, BUT IN APPEARANCE A WOMAN PERON’.

Years later Maria returned unnoticed to Breda and finally died at the age of 62 in her home somewhere along the oude vest.
