The 570 ha Mastbos is located south of Breda. The forest was created in 1505 by order of Count Hendrik III of Nassau. As one of the oldest cultivated woods in the Netherlands it has, among other things, provided wood for the VOC ships and for Breda Castle. For its inhabitants, the Lords of Breda, it also served as a hunting ground. The oldest part of the forest is located in the area around hotel Mastbos.
Now it is a walking area with centuries-old trees, impressive avenues and beautiful vistas. There is also a play forest. Besides the forest areas there are also moors with fens. The area is perfect for a day out in combination with the Markdal, Bouvigne Castle and the picturesque Ginneken with its stores and terraces.
In the weekend it can be very busy, which can lead to parking problems in the forest. You are therefore advised to come by public transport or by bike. The area can be reached by bus via line 145 to Galder or line 7 Ginneken, from the latter you have to walk a bit further. The bicycle route from the center of Breda takes you along the attractive historic ribbon of the Ginnekenstraat and is definitely recommended. For a snack and a drink you can go to the Boschwachter, Heren van Oranje, Den Deijl, Hotel Mastbosch or Grand-Café de Kogelvanger in the Mastbos. You can also end your walking tour with a snack and drink at the cosy Ginnekenmarkt.
Hotel mastbos is een mooie locatie om even uit te rusten na een lange wandeling of fietstocht. U kunt er een kopje koffie drinken, lunchen, dineren, vergaderen of op een terrasje zitten.
